I’m a pet owner. A father. A husband. A Homeowner. All this means that I’m constantly looking to better myself, family, and property and keep it as affordable as possible. From small gardening and preserving, to keeping prepared for emergencies, do it myself home repairs, and even trying to get a better lawn. I also like to make time and volunteer at a few local cemeteries to clean and maintain Federal veteran stones. So get ready for a combo of videos as I make my way through this thing called life!

Awesome!!!
is orvis soap necessary? Can i use regular dawn dish soap instead? Thank you
@@Quantrills.Raiders don’t use dish soap. Ingredients in the soap are bad for the stones. However, you don’t have to use soap at all. Just use water and a brush. Or wet the stone then apply D2, or wet n forget, and scrub with that. I use Orvus paste because it saves me D2. But it is not necessary.
@@NorthCentral ah ok thank you for the quick reply
And yes, love the battery powered sprayer, it’s the bomb! My husband definitely talks me out of ordering another one....gonna do it anyway I think as he does hog it!
I premix Orvus too, so much easier. We have very soft water and if I didn’t premix it I would have a hot mess. I already have tons of bubbles mixing it less that recommended.
@@HappierHeadstones that’s interesting. I have hard water. I mix mine almost 3x recommended.
@@NorthCentral Oh it is crazy. Then I have this non draining red clay which takes me forever for me to get rid of the bubbles. I will probably never use my entire container and that is with me finding other uses for it as well. I need lots and lots of water, sure would be great if some of these cemeteries had water access.
@@HappierHeadstones I usually take around 5 to 6 gallons with me, when that’s gone, I’m done lol.
@@NorthCentral LOL, yeah that is true for sure too, but can you imagine how much better things would get if only we had a hose.
Oh Cool! I was hoping you would do this one next.
@@HappierHeadstones I try and do them in order
Great job as usual. Those battery packs for these sprayers kick butt!!! I love mine. Looks like you have a new company truck, I think, do you stil have a gate lift?
@@HappierHeadstones same truck, just put boxes on it, and yep still loving the lift gate!
@@NorthCentral Oh ok, I guess I have never seen it close up like that.
@@HappierHeadstones I try to keep it out of videos, but sometimes it can’t be helped.
I got similar sanooer mirrors and got the wiring kit that had the pins and wired this up exactly as in the provided instructions and as shown in this great video. everything works except for the backup lights, really happy about the mirrors though. triple checked every connection, tried different things but could not get the cargo lights to turn on when in reverse, which was the feature I was most looking forward to.
@@Fedex_BloxFruits yea. Common mistake. They are not reverse lights, they are just cargo lights. Only come on when you press the cargo light switch in the cab.
Great job, thank you.🇺🇸
@@dwhunter8904 thank you sir!!
Two of my great-grandfathers had to go to work in a coal mine when they were boys because their fathers had died suddenly. They were only boys, but they both had to support their mothers and siblings. What's really crazy is that they both worked in the same coal mine--the Victoria mine in Preston County. They might have known each other, but I doubt they were buddy-buddy--they were eight years apart in age. The tombstones at 6:00 & 8:00 are both inscribed in Hungarian.
@@bigscarysteve thank you for sharing that. I love stories of people!
It's eerie how similar Isaiah Prickett's story is to that of my own 5th great-grandfather. Just twenty years after Isaiah died, my ancestor died in the very same way in Washington County, Ohio. He was in the woods looking for a lost cow when an Indian surprised him, murdered him, and scalped him. The details of the story are known because the Indian who did this was dumb enough to brag about it in front of a group of white men in Marietta, Ohio. Two of my ancestor's sons were in that crowd. They said nothing to identify themselves to the Indian as his victim's sons. A short time later, the Indian mysteriously disappeared. Unlike the Indian, the white men in this story were smart enough to keep their mouths closed, so nobody knows exactly what happened to the Indian--but it's easy to guess the general outline of the story. Similar to Isaiah, my ancestor's grave is marked with a very large modern tombstone. His original tombstone is now in the Washington County museum.
@@bigscarysteve I assume there are many stories that are similar to this!
My parents are buried in this cemetery. I have a question about the tombstones. My mother died first, and her tombstone had a cross on it above her name. When my father died, I told the funeral director I wanted the same sort of cross on the tombstone above my father's name. He told me they only put a religious symbol on one side of the tombstone--that is, unless the husband and wife were of different faiths. After my father died, we went and visited the grave, only to find that the cross is now on the side of the tombstone where my father's name is. Therefore, there must have been a different tombstone there originally. Why would they waste a tombstone that was only going to be temporary? And what happened to my mother's original tombstone?
@@bigscarysteve the original stone would have been discarded after the new stone was installed. The veteran would get the religious cross.
If you stand on either Goodwin Street or Ford Street and look toward this cemetery, you can still see where both streets used to go through where this cemetery is now. On the far side of Oak Grove Cemetery is another cemetery called Lawnwood Cemetery. I bet a lot of people don't know that there are actually two cemeteries there. Sometimes there's a chain-link fence between them--at other times, it disappears. I'm not sure if Oak Grove is the oldest cemetery in Morgantown or the oldest _surviving_ cemetery. There used to be another very old cemetery at the corner of Spruce Street and Forest Avenue--which is now the current location of First Presbyterian Church. That church building was constructed in the 1950's (although the congregation is far older). They just dug up the cemetery and destroyed it. The church used to have a parking lot up the hill from the church building itself (which has now been converted into a playground). There are steps leading up from the front door of the church to the playground. As you go up the steps to the playground, there's a retaining wall on the right. The old tombstones have been incorporated into that wall. I find it disheartening that anyone, but especially a church, would have so little respect for the dead. I've heard that in America, it's hard to find many cemeteries that are more than 150 years old. Once they get that old, people stop caring for them, and they just disappear. A similar irony is when Wal-Mart wanted to build a new location on 705. They were prevented from doing so because there was supposedly an Indian burial ground there. Later on, they built the Suncrest Towne Centre there, so I guess those Indian graves weren't too sacred to be desecrated by having other businesses built on top of them.
@@bigscarysteve from my understanding, there were many cemeteries around Morgantown in the 1800’s. In the late 1800,s the city went through an expansion period, and exhumed the bodies and moved them to Oak Grove. The land was sold and built upon by different businesses. And you are right about Lawnwood, not many know of its existence. I looked at a map of 1850 Morgantown with its many cemeteries. lol very different landscape today. Thanks for watching!
This is at least the third location for this cemetery. The county has moved it at least twice. I've never been to the current location, but I have visited this cemetery once. Back in 1982, the _Dominion Post_ ran a couple stories about how rowdy people were having all-night parties in this cemetery, littering it with their beer cans and breaking the wooden crosses that marked the graves. Around that time, I went to a youth group meeting at my church. After the formal meeting was over, everybody jumped in cars, saying there was a place where they hung out after the meeting. Turns out, this cemetery was that place. I asked the other teenagers what on earth they were thinking. If they had run into the partiers, it wouldn't have gone well for them. My great-grandmother is buried in this cemetery. When she died, my great-grandfather was so poor, he couldn't afford to bury her, so she ended up here. My great-uncle always wanted to buy a headstone to put on her grave, but he never did. He's long dead now, too. I wonder if anybody even knows the exact spot where she's buried.
@@bigscarysteve Dodnt know they had moved it. Very interesting. Thanks for watching!

Interesting work, the gravemarker for Corporal Dawson at Time 4:27 it appears he served in the CSA. I am surprised that he has a Latin Cross vs the Southern Cross of Honor? What is a choice available? I didn't realize that the CSA Veterans had the Latin Coss as a choice? Nice work NC. #RVGMINC
@@RVGMInc as far as I’m aware, the CSA veterans have the same choices as the US veterans as far as religious symbols. You also have to understand that this man survived the war. West Virginia started in the Confederacy as Virginia, but ended the war as a new state in the union. Many Confederate West Virginians were conflicted. They started by defending their homes from northern aggression, but ended the war being the aggressors to their homes. Must have been a very difficult time. Thanks for watching!
Nice Job NC. Since I will share this with others, I need to ask this, did you get permission to do this great work? Not a criticism of your fine service, but I tell all my viewers that permission is paramount. Great work and tutorial! #Rvgminc #Veterans

What products did you use if you dont mind my asking?
I wash the stone memorials with Orvus paste and water, rinse with water, and treat with D2 biological solution.
this stuff is junk
Good educational video.
My lawn is small and i don't need the whole bottle so i just take it off and use the same bottle again in three weeks ?

I just moved to Barrackville from Georgia. I wanna go ghosting hunting up here. Not to be disrespectful just to see if they have any thing they wanna say. I live in the old coal mine camp not far from there.
Can’t say I know much about ghost hunting. I believe, if you seek it you’ll probably find it. Just doesn’t always end up the way you think. Good luck!
I take precautions. I say a prayer before and after. I saw a video on a girl the was found murdered in 1990 on an road close to the Barrackville cemetery, Fame Cooper. Her killer was never found. So I'm gonna try reaching out to see if she can give some answers from the grave. I noticed u clean the headstones, thank u for doing that. When I'm out and about I try to at least clean the grass and dirt away. Thanks for sharing ur videos.
@@IntoTheUnknown420 thanks for watching!!
What is that tool. I need to clean about 20 family headstones and I’m 76
That is a lawn edger tool. a.co/d/dxDpvZg
Could D/2 Biological solution be used on brass plaques as well? Was thinking D/2 to clean a few, then after it's dried, put on rennassaince wax to keep it looking nice. Would that setup work, or should i use something else for brass plaques on headstones?
There are a number of material that D2 says it will treat. Bronze is not among them. I try and follow manufacturer directions. I typically wash and scrub plaques with orvus paste and water, then dry and apply wax.
@@NorthCentral does metal type matter, ie. steel, brass, bronze, etc.?
@@Out-to-Pastor honestly, I’ve never used it on anything except stones. Understand, this really is not a cleaner so much as a treatment to kill biologics. It does have mild cleaners in it, but it’s still used to kill biologics. Manufacturing label doesn’t really say anything about metals. Probably wouldn’t hurt it, however, D2 is expensive. Why waste it when mild soap, water and a soft scrub brush would do?
Maybe the bag method isn't effective because the solution needs sunlight to help facilitate the ''bleaching'' effect. Can you please compare the smell to something so we know how it smells? For example: ammonia, feces...
In went back later and the stone looked great. As for the smell, if you ever raked grass in a bag and forgot to dispose of it. After a month you opened the bag, that’s about what it smelled like. X10
@@NorthCentral ~ So it smells like decayed/decaying compost. Nasty. Thanks for your reply.

You are very welcome I want to get into cleaning tome stones do you have any advice for me
@@allysonstamand5336 I have over a hundred videos on cleaning and maintaining veteran headstones. My advice would be to watch a few of my videos, then watch some videos from Past Preservation channel and Honor your DNA channel.
@@NorthCentral OK thank you so much I will watch some of your videos
You do great work by yourself! Lifting stones with your own equipment and using 3 different approved cleaners to properly clean the stones! So because of one stone being raised too high for them, you will only be cleaning upright stones? Im sorry. I wish they would see the difference your work is compared to others who are not as neat and organized like you. Recently, I saw one woman only cleaning the front of the stone because the back didnt look dirty and didnt want to waste product ( was her excuse, what about the dirt in the stone she cant see). Another thing i notice is ppl not cleaning the full stone, just the wording or top of the stone. Leaving the bases filthy. My thought is , if you are going to clean the stone , clean every part of the stone to preserve it fully. You are one of a few who tries their best to do the job neatly, clean and professionally.
Thanks so much. It is appreciated. The decision wasn’t all theirs. It is ok. It is the start of a new season! There is a lot to look forward to! Thank you for watching!!

Yea, this is kind of what happens when you do things in a larger cemetery. Especially one that is taken care of by a municipality. They have there manager, that have there opinion, and that’s that.
